Canklow Woods Primary School has started a petition to stop Kentucky Fried Chicken opening a restaurant 40m from the main entrance of their school...
Listen to Councillor Mahroof Hussain on BBC Radio Sheffield Breakfast Programme talking to Toby Foster on why he objects to the application.
Head Teacher, Governors, Parents, Children and Local Councillors objected to the scheme. Head teacher John Henderson said the restaurant would have a "negative impact" on the community. he further states that the school had worked tirelessly over the past three years to promote healthy eating.
Labour councillor Mahroof Hussain told the BBC that he had "legitimate concerns" about the proposal, branding it "inappropriate. The temptation would be so great that children would walk past KFC, to and from school and the resistance from the parents may not be there."
"There is a High Court Ruling which clearly states that the distance of fast food establishment from a school is a material consideration when deciding the application. Precedence has been set by Local Authorities in Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest, Blackpool and Northamptonshire”
