Young people win national vote

Rotherham’s two latest members of the United Kingdom Youth Parliament and their deputies have been voted into office by young people from across the Borough

The votes were counted on Friday with voting taking place in schools, youth centres/provisions and colleges. The new MYPs will now represent the borough on the national stage.

The new 'MYPs' are:

•Josh Parker - aged 14 from Thrybergh
•Kyle Walker - aged 16 from Wath
And their deputy MYPs are:

•Oliver Blake - aged 13 from Bramley
•Josh Whitehouse - aged 15 from Kimberworth Park
Each candidate in the election has to draw up their manifesto and these are then published anonymously so voters make a choice based on what the young people say they want to achieve by being a MYP and not just on who they are.

Councillor Mahroof Hussain, Cabinet Member for Community Development, Equality and Young People's Issues, said: "It's great to see so many young people getting involved in local democracy with more than 5,000 votes cast in this election.

"The work of the Youth Parliament gives a prominent national voice to our young people as well as offering a great opportunity for them to develop personally, so I wish all our new MYPs well in their new roles."
