About Mahroof Hussain

altMahroof was elected as a councillor to serve people of Boston ward in 2002, he was subsequently elected to the newly formed Boston Castle ward in 2004 and 2008. He is currently a Cabinet Member on the Council

Mahroof has experience of working at a national level in high profile political positions. He has experience of working in Local Government, House of Commons and with Government Departments and European Parliament and its institutions.

He was a parliamentary researcher for a Yorkshire Member of Parliament in 2001.
Mahroof was appointed by Local Government Association Labour Group to represent Labour Party Councillors on the Regeneration Board in 2004. He has served on several boards since.

He stood in the 2005 General Election in the Constituency of Sheffield Hallam where he was the only Labour candidate in South Yorkshire to increase the Labour vote.

Following the 2005 terrorist bombings in London, Mahroof was called upon by the Home Office to be a member of the Tackling Extremism Task Force which made some wide ranging recommendations to the government. He has subsequently worked with Department of Communities and Local Government on the next steps.

Mahroof served as a member of the government Local Delivery Advisory Group until May 2009, which was jointly chaired by the Home Secretary and Communities Secretary. This group was made of key partners from the across the country to see how we can involve local people and implement local initiatives around the PREVENT agenda.

Mahroof is a firm believer in union rights and is very active in UNITE. He was elected onto the UNITE Yorkshire & Humber Regional council and Regional Political Committee in 2006. He is currently on the UNITE Yorkshire Sub Region Political Committee.

Mahroof was also elected by Yorkshire & Humber constituency Labour parties onto the National Policy Forum (NPF) in 2007-2010. He is also currently a member of the Labour Party Yorkshire and Humber Regional Labour Party Board.

Mahroof was a member of the Ethnic Minority Employment Task Force. The Task Force was formed in response to the recommendations of the Prime Minister’s Strategy Unit’s report on ethnic minorities in the Labour market. The Task Force is chaired by the Minister for Employment and Welfare Reform and consists of Ministers from five other government departments.

Mahroof was awarded a Member of British Empire (MBE) for service to Local Government in 2008 New Years Honours.

Mahroof was awarded the Councillor of the Year 2008/2009 by Local Government Yorkshire and Humber.

Mahroof has given interviews to regional and national newspapers. He has made TV appearances on Look North and Calendar on political issues and most notably BBC Politics Show.

He has regularly given national speeches on various topics on tackling Extremism, Equalities in the public sector and at the Police Superintendents Association Annual Conference on Community Leadership.
